.
This superb live steam model was recently completed and tested. (Winter 2001)

Some technical information:

Scale 1:32
Weight engine 6.8 Kg
Weight tender 2.4 kg
4 working simple expansion cylinders bore x stroke 10 x 20 mm
Exhaust: Double nozzle with extended internal petticoat.
Valve gear: Walschaert's with one slide valve for two180 degree opposite cylinders.
Boiler: Own design single flue with cross tubes and three water tubes above burners. Double tube super heater with low internal resistance.
Burner: Methylated Spirit (methyl alcohol) chickenfeed system with four 10 x20 mm wick burners. Wick material 3mm above the burner edge (better combustion with more air access which keeps the flames low).
Pump: Driven from crankshaft 5mm bore x 5.5 mm stroke.
Hand pump: In tender; 9mm bore x 24 mm stroke.
Lubrication: Oil displacer and mechanical lubricator.
Running gear: All wheels are coil sprung and equalised. The motion has been fitted with hardened journals and hard bronze bushing. The bar frame of the NCS 72 has been CNC machined.

Performance:

The engine is capable of hauling 40 kg on a level track, maintaining pressure with axle pump bypass shut on a cold and windy day.
This represents about 16 coaches with plain bearings running on PTFE or light oil.
Most efficient is a train of around 10 coaches with adjusted wicks and moderate speed.
The fuel/water ratio can be about 1: 4.3 in optimal conditions. This is a figure that takes some effort to achieve!
Running time is about 45 minutes before refueling.
